California Assembly, Senate wont impose furloughs

Come on, shouldn’t the leaders of California be setting an example?

“The Legislature always needs to lead the way, as does the executive branch of government,” Steinberg told reporters.

So impose furloughs until you guys figure out how to cut 10 percent and layoff a few workers.  It’s an easy first step!

I’m having a very hard time sorting this out. So the Assembly and Senate have not done their jobs in balancing the budget, gotten the State into a huge deficit, and furloughed State workers 2 days a month for the next 18 months to save allegedly $1.3 billion out of a $42 billion deficit. How is it that Senators and Assemblypeople will not be furloughed, keep their entire pay, continue to get their per diem, keep their State car, and all the additional perks that come with their job? Yet it is the State worker that has to pay for them not doing their job? The “savings” from the furlough will cover only a very small percentage of the deficit. Why is there so much attention to the State worker? If the State worker should have to feel the pain, the legislature should as well. Since Pete Wilson is advising the Governor, is there a personal reason for all of this since he wasn’t able to raid the PERS pension fund when he was governor? This is all very curious to me.

Thank you for the comment. I find this extremely disturbing also. In these times our “leaders’ should be leading by action and example. I encourage you to call your Senator and Assembly person and ask. You will likely end up talking to a bureaucrat that will do all they can to convince you that they are working hard 24-7. Good luck!

Thank you for your thoughts, Jeff. I find myself growing increasingly intolerant of being fed lip service. I firmly believe that we as citizens of this great State should demand that our public servants should do their job which is, dare I say, serve the public. It is time that Californians take action and vote out each and every Legislator. We have all been lied to, taken advantage of, taken for granted, and ignored for far too long. My patience has run out for Legislators that push the agendas for lobbyists and special interests and do hardly anything for the good of California. I know as a single person that I cannot do much, but collectively, our influence can make a huge difference. Is there a grassroots effort to vote out our Legislators? I would join in a heartbeat.

I do not know of any grassroots effort to recall any state officials. I put this site together to get people talking about the issues. I am so feed up with the double talk and bs the media and politicians feed us. It is time for the taxpayers of California to say enough is enough. But it takes the people of California to stand up and say NO MORE.

    Hi Jeff -
I do not know of any grassroots efforts either, but wouldn’t it be great if this could be a forum to start one up. I, too, have had it with being force fed lies and untruths that the media and government spew out. Our society has become one that is becoming quickly conditioned to being fearful and complacent. Think about all the things that have been happening in the recent past in addition to our State’s woes - terrorist threats, federal bailout money that has been used to give execs bonuses (that’s OUR money!), lack of control in the mortgage industry (sub-prime loans). It not only time to say NO MORE to the way things are with our State Legislator, it is also time to say NO MORE to the way the federal government has been mismanaging our money and our livelihood. It’s time for all of us to stand up and fight for ourselves.
