County executives said the largest job cuts since the 1994 bankruptcy were forced by reductions in state funding and are central to protecting the county’s ability to provide key local services, such as law enforcement.
Are our politicians starting to figure out the services that we really need or are they just targeting the group that is easiest to lay off. I truly hope the former is true. Don’t get me wrong we need to help the children of the poor but local and state agencies need to be ordered, most critical to least critical, and the heaviest cuts need to be done to the least critical services. Police, Fire Fighters, education, infrastructure maintenance/improvements are all at the top of my list. MediCal (for the elderly and truly disabled) and other programs are in the middle. Social work and free health care for the able are near the bottom of my list.
As a people we need to make sure that we have a clear understanding of what is a priority to us so that we can clearly communicate that to the politicians. This is the only way that our tax monies will improve our lives! Otherwise we are throwing our money down the drain.
